Rotork assists BAE Systems in naval base actuator upgrades

Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to improve a sequence of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling movement of ships between the ocean and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A collection of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a difficult setting. Discount wanted to retain all the benefits of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators had been chosen. These had to be specifically tailored by Rotork to beat problems around confined areas and difficult access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes have been mechanically tailored in order that both actuator and gearbox might be manually operated without coming into the confined house. Rotork designed particular hand auto levers and thru drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to remove the necessity for confined area entry.
Actuators within the IQ range are watertight, providing ingress safety to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a sophisticated twin stacked show with configurable data logger performance, and an absolute position sensor offers reliability and accuracy.
